"Bratby was referred to as a Kitchen Sink School artist because of his interest in domestic settings. Social Realism is characterised by its refusal to idealise or flatter its subject matter and by a determination to find the real in the mundane, the dirty and the depressing. Here, Bratby shows a typical scene from British life in the 50's, giving the viewer a look at a working class, outside toilet from the perspective of someone about to use it or clean it. Most art buyers in the 50's would have enjoyed inside toilets. This work might have reminded them that, on the physical level, if not on the social, we are all equal."
